Prepare Your Roof Before Storm Season Hits
March through June is peak storm season in North Texas. Before the hail starts flying, take 30 minutes to assess your roof's condition. Here's your complete checklist.
Ground-Level Inspection (10 minutes)
Walk around your home and look up. You're checking for:
☐ Missing or damaged shingles — Look for bare spots, curled edges, or shingles hanging out of alignment
☐ Sagging — Any dip in the roofline indicates structural issues
☐ Damaged flashing — Check where the roof meets walls, chimneys, and vents
☐ Gutter condition — Gutters should be firmly attached and free of debris
☐ Downspout drainage — Water should discharge at least 4 feet from the foundation
☐ Tree branches — Trim any branches within 6 feet of the roof
☐ Siding damage — Storm damage on siding often means roof damage too
Attic Inspection (10 minutes)
Grab a flashlight and head up:
☐ Daylight visible — Any light coming through the roof deck is a problem
☐ Water stains — Dark spots on rafters or decking indicate past or current leaks
☐ Mold or mildew — Musty smell or visible growth means moisture is getting in
☐ Ventilation — Check that soffit vents and ridge vents are unobstructed
If your ground-level inspection reveals any of the following, schedule a professional inspection immediately:
Multiple missing shingles
Visible sagging
Active water stains in your attic
Your roof is 15+ years old and hasn't been inspected recently
You know a hailstorm hit your area recently
